The RD-11 (Red Delicious 11) is a modern, high-color clonal bud-sport mutation within the Red Delicious genetic family, imported from international nursery programs into high-altitude Indian orchards to propel the shift toward high-density commercial production. Originating as a selected clone designed to overcome the coloring difficulties of traditional strains like Royal Delicious, it quickly earned a reputation as a modern favorite for delivering an intense, near-100% dark red block finish and elongated shape even under diffuse light conditions. Modern growers have adopted RD-11 primarily on clonal dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks (such as M9 and MM111) to achieve precocious cropping, easier canopy management, and superior post-harvest firmness for long-distance transport. Cultivation thrives in mountain orchards at elevations of 4,000 to 7,500 feet, requiring 800 to 1,000 winter chill hours below 45°F (7°C) to satisfy dormancy, trigger uniform spring blooming, and achieve optimal color saturation.
