The Dorsett Golden apple was discovered in Nassau, Bahamas, during the 1950s by Irene Dorsett as a natural chance seedling, likely derived from the classic Golden Delicious variety. Cultivated on moderately vigorous, highly productive trees with an upright-to-spreading growth habit, it serves as the ultimate low-chill companion and universal cross-pollinator for the Anna variety. It yields medium-to-large, round-conical fruit with smooth, thin skin. The skin color quality is exceptionally clean, displaying a classic golden-yellow background often kissed with a distinctive, faint pinkish-red blush on the sun-exposed side. Specifically evolved for sub-tropical climates, it demands an ultra-low 100 to 200 chilling hours to break dormancy, making it completely unsuited for true high-altitude zones but perfect for low-lying valley belts and sub-tropical foothills between 2,500 and 4,500 feet. Flowering exceptionally early in late winter, it finishes fast for an ultra-early summer harvest by mid-to-late June, ensuring growers can hit the market ahead of standard regional crops. The flavor profile is refreshing and light, offering a remarkably sweet, aromatic, and classic Golden Delicious-style taste with very low acidity.
