Originating in the United States as a controlled crossbreed between Jonathan and Golden Delicious, the Red Golden apple was selected in 1930 and commercially introduced in 1945. Grown on moderately vigorous, highly productive trees with open canopies that serve as exceptional cross-pollinators, it yields medium-to-large, round-oblong fruit averaging 68 to 78 millimeters in diameter and 170 to 200 grams in weight. Its smooth skin features a warm orange-red wash layered over a golden-yellow base, offering vastly superior resistance to high-humidity skin russeting compared to pure yellow cultivars. Requiring 700 to 800 winter chilling hours, it performs reliably across mid-elevation Himalayan belts between 5,000 and 6,500 feet. Harvested mid-to-late September as starches clear, it delivers a distinctly sweet, intensely aromatic, and low-acid honeyed flavor profile. The crisp, fine-grained, cream-colored flesh holds pressure well, storing reliably for three months in standard cold refrigeration.
